A WEEKEND IN ROME | DAY ONE

October 09, 2016

A few weekends ago we took a family trip to the beautiful city of Rome! We went for three days and managed to fit in a lot of sightseeing in that time. It was a jam-packed trip and we all had an amazing time! Rome is honestly one of the most beautiful cities we have ever seen, there is an incredible church or enormous sculpture around every corner! There is a lot of expectation when visiting a city such as Rome and it certainly did not disappoint (except for not living out the entire Lizzie McGuire movie)!

This is the first time we have been to Italy and we definitely want to see more of it after this trip! We ate a lot of gelato and pizza, Italians definitely know what they're doing! We even found an ice cream shop selling 150 different flavours!

It was around 1 o'clock in the afternoon when we finally arrived at our hotel, so we decided to go for a little wander and some lunch whilst waiting for our rooms to be ready.
First we visited The Trevi Fountain. We knew we were heading in the general direction of The Trevi Fountain but it just suddenly springs upon you! It is a gorgeous, white fountain bigger than we had imagined, adorned with impressive statues and accompanied by the lovely sound of running water. At nearly all times of the day you will find it packed with tourists, all with the same idea as you of turning your back and throwing in a coin to make a wish. We were very hungry at this point so decided to come back another time to make our wishes. (We actually ended up passing it about 4 times in the same day!)

From the Trevi fountain we wandered on to the Pantheon, which was really close! Again, it's just in the middle of the little streets and you don't expect to suddenly see it standing there. Inside the Pantheon is bigger than you picture it from the outside. As we looked around, we all tried to listen in on some of the tour guides while they explained the history. Almost 2000 years after it was built, the Pantheons dome is still the worlds largest unreinforced concrete dome. We thought that was pretty impressive, it's hard to imagine that it actually existed so long ago! It doesn't take long to have a quick look around, take in the history and then be back outside exploring the gorgeous little side streets. From there, we strolled back to our hotel for a quick refresh before going back out for an evening of exploring.

For the evening, we took to Piazza Navona as we had heard this was an evening must-see. In the middle of the square stood one of the many needles in Rome. It was surrounded by gorgeous little side streets lit up with bars and restaurants.

We explored the labyrinth of side streets and stopped off for an Aperol Spritz (which then quickly became the drink of the holiday) under the pretty fairy lights. The place we stopped at was called Cybo which was a modern restaurant/bar, it felt a bit less touristy than some of the other places we'd seen. We sat outside and watched the world go by feeling very Italian.

We ended up walking away from Piazza Navona and over a bridge, just as the sun was setting behind the dome of St Peters. Perfect timing for a beautiful sunset picture!

We didn't really know where we were going but we stumbled upon St Peters Basilica without even realising it! It looked so pretty lit up at night! After this, we headed back towards Piazza Navona and ate some delicious pasta before collapsing back at out hotel!
